Wednesday

My day to day experience with SBI

It was a great day when my friend called me saying my roll no appearing in the final selected candidates list.
After a month or so I got a provisional letter asking me to report State Bank of Patiala HO, Patiala for fulfilling pre-appointment formalities like medical, domicile etc. And the next day I got confirmation for my first branch of State Bank of Patiala (Associate bank of SBI) in Hisar which is my home city itself.

I got my Formal Appointment letter in which it was written that the first year of my job will be for training comprising institutional training and on the job training. My institutional training was postponed for a while as bank was requiring officers immediately.

  7. Arun, I want to understand what do you mean by data center?
one more thing are you from technical background? and your work is of technical nature or banking work?

    ReplyDelete
  8. The acronym 'RTGS' stands for Real Time Gross Settlement. RTGS system is a funds transfer mechanism where transfer of money takes place from one bank to another on a 'real time' and on 'gross' basis. This is the fastest possible money transfer system through the banking channel. Settlement in 'real time' means payment transaction is not subjected to any waiting period. The transactions are settled as soon as they are processed. 'Gross settlement' means the transaction is settled on one to one basis without bunching with any other transaction. Considering that money transfer takes place in the books of the Reserve Bank of India, the payment is taken as final and irrevocable.

  9. plz suggest a book and its author and publication for general awarness for bank po exam

  10. There are a number of books and correspondence courses available in market for bank preparatory examination. There is,however no substitute for self study and self preparation. Regular studies, systematic prepartion nd confidence is all that is required to pass the exam.
Personally I will not advise any book but advising you to study regular. And for that purpose start solving the papers or mock tests available viz. clerical level exam or officer level.
The basics can be done by using tenth standard books but try hard to get the concept behing the question because it is concept that will help to take answer out in given time. Then start doing tests from Reasoning, Maths, English etc. Try to maximize your score day by day.
Usually these tests are available in magzine like competition success nd all. I will be publishing Previous papers and study material as soon as possible because it is crucial time for hiring new entants in banking system.
TRY HARD and remain on basics

  11. Bank employees wage increase 17.5% including pension load for p.f. optees, pushed the attraction of a bank job far behind than that of a central government job, while compairing stress & strain involved between these two. Definitely unemployed will join in bank for employment, but not brains as it used to be happened in the days of Eighties & Nineties. One should observe that the so called wage hike every five years in banks have been quite minimal during the past decade or so whereas in central govt. there has been a quantum jump this time. As matters stand today the pay package in central govt. is quite high when compared with similar posts in banks. So naturally people who have other choices in hand will not join banks any more. And one should know that in banks now a days people have to toil hard even beyond ofice hours, that too being loaded with heavy risks all the time. In such a condition the present pay package wil not attract talents into banks.

  14. Yes, Women Probationary Officers also get transfers in Banks. Yes it is true that they are preferred all the time whenever there is any vacant seat near there hometown but in other cases they have to go. In most of the cases they try to avoid promotions to escape transfers.

Congratulations! Tell, what kind of help you want?

  15. How much does a probatopnary officer earn

    ReplyDelete
  16. Normally it is Rs. 10000/- basic in Public sector banks for a P.O. Added to this is Dearness Allowance & House Rent Allownce (depending your residencial status) or Lease accomodation

    10000 + 52 % of basic as D.A. + 600 = Approx. 15800 ... deduct Rs. 1000/- towards Provident fund.

If lease accomodation is taken: no HRA will be paid and lease rent would be given. It is according to residence. In Metro cities it is Rs. 10000/- i. e. Total salary would be near about Rs. 25000/- in Delhi.

In SBI, they have 4 more increments already on Rs. 10000/- basic i. e. Approx. Rs. 12000 basic and total would come near about Rs. 28000/-

There are many different variations depending upon nature of candidate status. Give me details, i. e. in which bank and location, I will calculate salary for you.

During the Institutional training session you can request direct to HRD for transfer or you can be in touch with Officers Union for the purpose.

Please help me to take a decision. I have also sent a mail to you in this regard.

  21. Hi Goyal,
    Thanks for the response.
So we have a provision to get transfer?.
Do you know any URL, where I can see the rules/conditions/provisions for applying for the same?
You know any cases, who got transfer before completion of the 2yr probation period?

    Your response is highly appreciated.

    regards
    AG

    ReplyDelete
  22. Dear Ajith,
It clearly depends upon the person trying for the transfer to other State. There is no such provision for the transfer but yes, actually there are many cases where people do get transfer to the required place but that always depends up on the request only. During probation period, you can request to HRD and it will depend on descretion of those people to sanction or not. In probation period, dont look for transfer but request required State for next training branch.

  23. Hello Niranjan,
    Congrats for the selection!
It will depend on the place of posting while calculating your full salary. But overall it will be near about your present salary and not more than that in any case.
If the environment of your present job place is not bothering you to leave the job I will not recommend you to join IOB. In banking one thing is sure that you will leave like a gentle person but not more than that.

  24. Hi Mr. Goyal,

If someone's main aim is to learn the financial minute and to have a good growth will you suggest him to join a PSU bank or a private bank. Also as per the web site of any bank it says that the total emolument for a Bank Po is 15800 Approx.
    # Is it that much a Bank Po will earn ?
    # How a PO gets confirm ?
    # Why there is a Salary difference in SBI & Other PSU banks ?
    # What is the Job specification of a BANK PO

    Thanking you in anticipation.

  25. Hi Goyal,

Thanx very much for your response. I would like to point out that my present job has no career growth but at the same time, no transfers. I am a bit confused now to take a decision.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hello Niranjan,
It will be better for you to be with your present job as banking job is full of risk and responsiblities and you have to set all the time for transfers after every 3-4 years. You have to work for all the day in banking system as Officer has to remain on duty all the time. I again recommend banking only if you are not satisfied with your office environment because many a times it has been seen that government system do decline the character of person.

  27. Hello Goyal,

Thank you very much for your valuable suggestion.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hello Nishant,

If you are pursuing something real in Financial sector then I will suggest depending on your position. If you want stablity with knowledge there is enough time in PSU for that purpose. But if you are pursuing fast channel growth then private banks are there for you. In private you have to be prepare all the time for challenges with remaining on their track only. While calculating Salary, I will tell you that SBI's package for 2009 batch PO is Rs. 532000/- but in hand vary from Rs. 18000 upto Rs. 30000/-. After training period there is a confirmation test depending on which confirmation is flagged.
SBI is different from other PSU in all the terms that is why Salary and many other previlages are different there. For Job specification I will refer you to bankexperience.blogspot.com

Whatever conditions are given, a person applying is meant to fulfill all of them.

  36. Hello Irshad,

    Congratulations for your selection!

As the 6th pay commission's revision is due in our salary hence I am giving you salary structure before salary revision which is settled at 17.5% for banking industry.

    Salary structure before revision:

    Basic: Rs. 10000/-
    + Dearness Allowance (DA 62.8%): Rs. 6280/-
+ House Rent Allowance (HRA 6.5%): Rs. 650/-
    Totaling Rs. 16930/-

    - Provident Fund contribution (10%): Rs. 1000/-
    - Tax (as per calculation): N/A if your year's salary will remain in prescribed limit
    - Subscription towards Union Welfare etc: Rs. 100/- (veries bank to bank)
    Totaling Rs. 1100/-

    Take Home: Rs. 15830/-

If you are opting for leased accommodation then a separate payment cheque would be made in the name of owner. Permissible limit in metro cities is Rs. 10000/- for leased accommodation. In this case you will not receive any HRA. Hence your total income would be Rs. 15830 - 650 + say 10000 = Rs. 25180/-.

Along with all this, in our bank we are receiving reimbursement for various expenses.
    Petrol: Rs. 610/-
    Entertainment: Rs. 225/-
Casual labour: Rs. 300/- (Rs. 10/- per day)
    News Paper: Rs. 350/-

These reimbursement depends up on bank to bank.

Hopeful all the formalities will not take more than that day as in our case we were free after lunch time. For the accommodation you have to ask official as it will depend on their Guest home or other facilities. We do have our guest houses in Patiala. Best of luck!

  39. Hello Avik,

Yes Avik, you are right that in Officer rank you may be posted anywhere in India. And it will depend on the system & procedure of the bank whether they are sending you on Institutional training first or at branch i.e. on the job training. It depends on your luck to get hometown as first branch.

Yes it will really be confusing whenever one going in other trade. As there is not a big difference in salary but yes job security is always there in PSU job. But it depends on your interest whether choosing an all different trade will be suitable for you or not.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes as you said there is a hike of 17.5% in salary of Bank's employees except SBI which have denied to the group's decision. For your information this 17.5% will not mean a direct increase of 17.5% in previous salary but this hike would increase salary in other (12.5 + 5)% ways. Still salary has not been revised.

As SBI is taking this exam first time for freshers, they have not clearly mentioned about the procedure. Even this is not clear to the employees also. Profile would be decided after your 1 year training and your salary as basic is around Rs. 14000, it would be near about 25k.

  49. Hello Vishal,

Vishal take it for grant that your exposure/experience in banking will make you fit for many other trades/fields. Your experience in banking will be countable almost in every sector. A P.O. can reach up to the top most level of the bank i.e. M.D. or so but you will have to work hard for that as there is tough competition after staging Scale V-VI.

You will remain ineligible before obtaining the Final Score Card from your Institution. A bank's assessment date for reckoning your eligibility for education or age will be given in each case. Your Final Score Card date should be same or before that assessment date.

You are not eligible as per date of educational qualification and age criteria.

  52. Hello Shashank,

If we are talking about Probationary Officer (PO), they are in banks to serve anywhere in India for 24*7. Interestingly it is 24*7 i.e. you can be called up in a rainy night and you can't deny. And when we are talking about training, all banks have their different training system. Even there are some banks which are not giving any training and Officer will be joining a given branch for permanent posting. There are not any standard and even in State Bank their are POs which have seen the four corner of India in the last one year training.

You can put a request after some time in service but you can't claim.

  56. Hello Neha,

As you said that getting through P.O. exams is tough, its not so, but I will say that its management of time & questions only.

The most important area which a candidate ignores repeatedly is time management there. The standard of questions in the exam is relatively very easy and reasoning is not actual logical questions but they are only calculation based interpretation of data. Sorry I won't like to tell you particular books to read but I can give some dimensions to take a lead!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hello Anchun,

First of all, banking will not add values to your current profile but it will change it entirely. Make it sure! Your software profile isn't having anything with the banking system.
Yes its evident from current trend that an Engineer with academic and rational thought process gets lured by economic & financial aspects of country.

Doing MBA (Finance), working in a bank isn't second side of a dice but its other side of a coin; as we are having 2 PO in our batch from Infosys, from their experience I will say that dont try to relate both for your interest, go by your interest.

HRA will be around 6% of basic. CCA will be given for selected big cities as compensatory allownace. In total you will be getting gross Rs. 17500 and other perks can be around 2000 or so.

    Its good to hear!

Its hard to tell exactly when you will be receiving call letter but it has been seen that after a month or so Banks start giving joining letters. There shall be a Medical and documentation process before your joining.
Yes you will be able to prepare for Civil examination but you have to be a hard worker in that case because in normal cases they will be taking extra advantage of a PO and you will be left for home at 7-8 O'clock.
There shall nothing attached to the closing with yours joining.

  64. Thanks Dear,

Yes there is a lot of similarity between the entrances of MBA and PO exams. There is no end to the preparation so I will not say that you not requires rehearsals. I will suggest you to take mock tests of banking PO exams within stipulated time limit and with great determination.

As far descriptive is concerned in State Bank descriptive there will be 3 parts: Precis, Letter & Essay Writing. In some exams there you will be having 5 questions with 2 or 3 choices in each to write short essay on given topic. You have to make it fast considering lime limit.

The first and foremost is your content, how much relevant and with current news and statistics and second will be your English writing skills. You should be well conversant with current affairs for that.

  65. Sir will you tell us how much time we will be having for descriptive part?

Can you calculate my inhand salary according to the latest changes in salary structure?
i have gone through all the websites related to sbi but still searching for my answers......

  67. Hello Dear,

Excuse me I wasn't able to spare time for my blog last days! Yes they do have welfare association apart from SBIOA; First and foremost is SBI Employees Welfare Association; then centrally we have All India Bank Employees' Association; they have a separate association for SC/ST employees; Pensioners association and other. As bank is having separate zones and circles; it will depend in which circle you are joining. As CGEWHO comes under Housing Ministry and only Central Government Employees are eligible we people wont be entertained there. Apart from it, basic salary would be around Rs.13800/- and total in hand will hover around Rs.26-27k excluding the effects of 6th pay commission. And no one knows exactly how much we will be getting after that so no ideas for that.

  70. Yet I have not seen a person with totally blindness but there are many persons with "Low Vision" in banking. Banking system gives reservation to the Visually Impaired persons on certain conditions. If a candidate is fulfilling conditions as per banking norms no one will deny to admit that person. PSU are coming under "Right to Information Act" under which you can obtain your score along with sectional marks and Exams cut off also. You can inquire about the GD and Interview marks and cut off.

  85. Hi Mr.Goyal,
It's a relief to find a blog dedicated to this topic. I am sure you are winning hearts.
I have some queries in this area.
I have been selected so the post of Assistant Manager (Systems) (Grade JMGS-I) in the State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur.
I have three years of experience in a leading software services company.
My current package here is 4.7 lacs per annum.
I am technically sound and want to learn and grow more.
Can you please advise me if it will be a right decision for me to go with the SBBJ offer for this post.
Also, could you please shed some light on the pay and leaves in Probation period (2 years).
Further, it will be of great help if you enlighten me on the growth prospects available in this field.
Please help me out as this will be my first change of company.
    Many Thanks in advance.

    Manish Kumar

    ReplyDelete
  86. Congrats dear Manish,
I think your CTC would be more than you mentioned.
If you wants a secure position, SBBJ would be good but otherwise technically advancement would not be that much as you can grow in concern which is directly related to the field. Pay in hand would fall nearly 20 to 22 k in INR only exclusive of your lease accomodation. In probation period, usually only one leave against a month is credited.

    Best of luck!

Recently I have cleared the Speacial Technical Executive (STE) in MMGS-III rank examination. Can you please tell me how would be the future in SBI in such jobs, promotions and salary revisions? The basic salary of MMGS-III is 25700-31500, and take home may be 36000 only in metro cities. My present salary is higher than this and I have another job at hand in one of the largest pvt engineering company in India with almost double takehome. I am in a Dilema now. Earlier bank jobs were so lucrative, but now the salary seems very low.

Firstly, how is PO (rural) different from the mainstream PO. Is it that PO (rural) will serve as the field officer in SBI? What will be the profile of SBI PO (rural)?

Thank u so much for writing such a wonderful blog.

  162. Dear Sir,

I am a Btech(CSC) graduate, with 2.5 years of TCS work-ex. Recently i got selected for SBI PO 2011 batch. My present pkg is 3.8 per annum. However, I am not clear with the profile of a PO. I am enjoying my present job quite well. But is PO somehow related to my technical exposure, or is it like a career switch all together?

    Will respect your valuable guidance.

    Thanks in advance..

  171. Hello Sir,

I have been selected as a PO in United Bank of India recently. So sir i want to understand the salary structure as for JMGS-1 in 6th pay agreement says (Scale I - 14500 - 600/7 - 18700 - 700/2 - 20100 - 800/7 - 25700). All i understood here is that 14500 is my starting basic pay & 25700 is the highest. Now how that ( 600 x 7 = 4200) increment takes place... does this increment happens in year?? Please explain the funda between 14500 - 25700.... Thanks in advance

    ReplyDelete
  172. i mean that 600 increment happens per year for 7 year or 600 increment per month for 7 months..??
