Banking As a Profession
For Young graduate, an attractive offer after college is banking profession. It remains in this most wanted job position for years and it is because it enjoys much respect and prestige in the society. After the extinction of BSRB the only window to enter into this well sought career is Probationary Officers (PO) Exams conducted by individual banks. Banks inducts eligible graduates by this exam for training for a probational period of two years. The selected candidates performance during the probation period will decide their position after training. Different Banks recruit probationary officers during different periods in the year. Students has to keep on watch about the notifications and should be alert on applying promptly.

But it is the most common and highly sought after question that "what a Probationary Officer really do?".After the selection and till the date of joining the same question was making my mind puzzle. Hence I would like to share some of my experience with all of you looking after banks as a career option. I would be sharing my day to day experience within the bank so stay with us ...
It was a great day when my friend called me saying my roll no appearing in the final selected candidates list.
After a month or so I got a provisional letter asking me to report State Bank of Patiala HO, Patiala for fulfilling pre-appointment formalities like medical, domicile etc. And the next day I got confirmation for my first branch of State Bank of Patiala (Associate bank of SBI) in Hisar which is my home city itself.
I got my Formal Appointment letter in which it was written that the first year of my job will be for training comprising institutional training and on the job training. My institutional training was postponed for a while as bank was requiring officers immediately.
Please dont join... it wud be worst decision of ur life....

last year i was recruited for one of the psb's as PO .. but unfortunately due to bruised spinal cord, i was in bed for 6 months and i dint join the bank..
later after recovering, i cleared written exams of 3 psbs PO exam but i was not selected in interview, despite performing well.(i am pretty sure that i did perform well in interview).
But recently heard from one bank staff that once i reject a job offer from central government employment, i will be black listed and will not be selected further in any of the government job(this is a hidden process), i dont know this is true or not, .. but circumstances and situations make me believe so...
i am very much confused..

Government banks will never be able to attract good brains and fresh talent which are always absorbed by private companies and MNC's. A talented person who knows that he has a value and experience in the market will never join a PSB on a salary of 20-25k. Bank association really needs to think on this issue if they want good brains in their banks and maintain talented staff for future. A person who has spent 8-10 lakhs on his masters or mba will think 100 times before opting for PSB's.

If you are really interested in Banking sector, only then you should be coming in the way. Otherwise, ICICI has an intensive training programme for which the candidate only has to pay.

In associates, they dont have foreign branches, but through SBI deputation they do so.

As far as my knowledge, ICICI bank conducts a training programme called "Probationary Officer Training Programme". That is designed to develop specialists with banking knowledge. They have there own terms and conditions with the training programme. Its totally different procedure what you will see for other PSBs.

But there are people with diversified backgrounds in Banking and are successful. You refer one previous paper and start accordingly. It will consist 4 - 5 topic. ReplyDeleteActually State Bank Group and PNB banks take their exams on their requirement. No hard and fast rule for that. Surely you can find IBPS website for other banks.

Initially, in training period, a PO is supposed to be transferred in short terms, but in some PSBs like Bank of India, you may be posted in a branch for the whole probationary period.

Good planning Shivapriya, actually after an initial icebreaking period, it will depend on the relations and links you would be having in the bank. Actually, there is no hard and fast rules for transfers in relation to the place, its then depends on the influence that you can make on people out there.

DeleteThe basic thing I would suggest you to start giving mock exams based on SBI pattern. They will help you a lot. In next two months - 60 mock with time limit and scoring comparison must be done to assess sectional cutoff and then overall marking.

This time State Bank of India Probationary Officer examination is going to see a huge mass at their centres, as they are aggressively advertising the recruitment this time. Almost Rs. 69000 salary a month for a PO posted in Mumbai is being advertised, which is not including the Pay hike to be applicable from November 2012 onward. It shall positively impact atleast 20% in total.
